Brevin had the opportunity to go with Grandma Melanie and Grandpa Brian for a few days in June. Before he left, we were discussing how special it is to spend 1:1 time with our grandparents. I shared with him my most treasured memories of staying with my grandparents.
Grandpa and Grandma Wolters: My grandma had a special sweatshirt that she sewed for me to use as my jammies when I came. I remember the smell of their house. I remember how she would make my most favorite meal: homemade mac and cheese and sausage. I remember how she comforted me when I discovered the truth about santa and how she helped me be brave in cutting off my lost fingernail as it was barely hanging on from a major bruise. These memories only lasted until I was 9 as she passed away in 1989. Heath has now mastered her recipe and I still have the sweatshirt in my jammie drawer. But new memories were made with my grandpa. Most of my memories with him were spent up in Two Inlets at his lake home. Every single time we spent time up there, I slept on the floor at the foot of his bed with the same quilt. The last time I did that was almost 9 years ago, the night before I got married. Sometimes we would talk. Sometimes we would just listen to the loons calling. Sometimes he would snore. I treasure this time with all of my heart.
Grandpa and Grandma Warwas: My alone time with these grandparents consisted more of little weekend trips. I specifically remember going to the Iron Range and Iron World USA with them. I remember sitting at Chi Chis in Duluth looking over Lake Superior. My Grandpa Warwas never ever stopped joking. So when we were looking over the choppy water and I asked what the white things were bobbing up and down in the water, he replied with, "Boys!" and I would say, "NO WAY! Grandpa they are buoys!" And he would reply with, "Right, boys!" This would go round and round. 1:1 time with my grandpa often consisted of ride alongs to the grocery store, bring Sonnie Crowder the coupons for the week or a stop at Hardees.
Brevin had a lot of questions as it is hard to imagine his mommy as a little girl sometimes. He also asked a lot of questions about where my grandparents are now.
We sent our old digital camera with Brevin to capture his special time. It is interesting what a 4 year old decides to take pictures of. Let's just save you the 10 pictures of the Zamboni he took. Here is Brevin's 4 year old view of his time with Grandma Melanie and Grandpa Brian:
It was really fun because we got to ride the North Star train. I like sleeping over with my cozy cross at grandma's. I sleep on the floor every time at grandma's and she has a special motorcycle lamp. Grandma always takes me to do fun special things. My grandma is so sweet and she take good care of me.
