Halloween 2008

Well it has come and gone, Halloween 2008. Our Halloween discussions started this summer as Brevin really embraced pirates, what they say and learning about them whole hearted. When this leaked to Grandpa Gordy, he suggested, "You should build him a pirate ship out of his wagon." We took that suggestion seriously for a minute and didn't really think about it again until we mentioned it to our friends Kari and Paul. Paul immediately said, "I am in, as long as there is $40 of lumber involved." And so began the quest turn our little green wagon into a pirate ship. It was quite comical as Heath did some research and had to inform Paul that this would require a trip to Joannes and Michael's vs many trips to Home Depot. :) 3-4 nights of constructing and it was completed. I contributed with encouragement, but I knew well enough to stay clear of the garage so when I drove up and saw it in full completion, I was even in awe of what they accomplished.
Now even though Brev was embracing pirates, we knew it would be an interesting night as we have a little "cupcake" (he takes after his Uncle Steve) on our hands. So we did things to prep for Halloween like: went to the Halloween store (he wanted to leave very quickly) and watched Super Why a few times regarding Halloween and it all being "pretend." Leading up to Halloween, he truly loved the pumpkins, decorations and going through the section at Target...but often referring to things as "spoooooky." So day of, Heath and I were so excited for that night WE could barely contain ourselves (seriously, are we 8 again?). I was nervous for a let down, that Brev would cry and be freaked out of his own costume, the pirate ship and others and we would have to end the night quickly.

We had pizza with friend and grandparents and headed upstairs to start dressing. I was so relieved as he was WAY more into getting dressed up than I could have anticipated. He loved it all, kept it on, didn't whine and was a pro while daddy did his make up. He came downstairs and announced, "I am Captain Jack Sparrow!" Those blue eyes and dimples sure made him an irresistible Jack Sparrow. Jo Jo the Clown (Anna) came bouncing down as well and after 100 pictures we headed out to do up the night. He hopped right in his pirate ship with Jo Jo the Clown and off we went to the first house. The whole way up he was saying, "It is just pretend Mommy, it is just pretend, right?" (Thanks Super Why) When we got to the door he just stood there frozen which when Anna leaned over and coached him through the "Trick or Treat" like a pro. He received his candy and then asked, "Can I come in?" with a big grin. The next house was quite scary and he did ask to go back to Anna's house, but we pushed on and kept encouraging him about it all being pretend. After that, he was a champ! He enjoyed the whole process and so did we. It was a beautiful night out! We had 12 adults to the 2 kids---pretty hilarious sight! Brevin didn't even ask for his candy until we got home?! Heath and his pirate ship were the talk of the neighborhood. It was such a great moment to be trailing behind Heath and Brevin at one point---father and son---pulling the pirate ship, talking about booty and what pirates say. It was a moment I will treasure always. The night ended in the best way possible, BOTH Brevin and I saw a shooting star that was so vibrant and close...he said it was his favorite part of the whole night!

Not sure if Heath used up all his creative juices for one year (I heard rumblings of a GI Joe and tank for next year?), but The Vosberg Family truly enjoyed Halloween 2008 old school, the way Heath and I remembered it as kids. So fun to see that excitement and anticipation through both Anna and Brevin's eyes. It was an evening to always remember!
