It is amazing how we sometimes don't think about what it is that we are doing when we do things. There have been countless times in my life that I have realized how incredibly stupid I was in my actions. Sometimes, you get away without any serious consequence at all, such as the time that I got a friendly jolt from the light fixture wiring when I was replacing an outside light at our old house. Other times, one is not so lucky, such as the time when I was growing up, and decided it would be a good idea to try to climb a birch tree. It is surprising looking at the wonderful scar I still have on my stomach, that I didn't lose any of my internal organs. (You should really see it).
I was the lucky one who got to learn a lesson that really should have been quite obvious to us (namely Jill) the other night. I had driven to work on Tuesday, and met Jill at Rosedale to do a Brevin grab and go since she had a business meeting to attend to. When we met, Jill informed me that she picked up a bag of M&M's at Target so that Brevin and I could make some M&M cookies that night (I had been craving them for a while and made reference to them earlier in the week. Awfully thoughtful of her.) When I went into the backseat to get B-Rev, he was affectionately holding the bag of goodies saying "Mmmm M&M's" For some odd reason, I knew then it was going to be quite the night. We said our love you's to Mommy and headed down the road.
I had a stop to make and needless to say, we didn't make it home until about 7:00 pm. I guess one could say we stretched the limits a little bit for a boy who typically eats at 6:00ish. I got Brevin in his chair, and got him his milk, hoping to buy a few moments to get dinner together. B-Rev had three simple words to let me know what was on his mind... "NO MILK... M&M's!!!" It was not long after telling him that a TASTY and DELIGHTFUL fish stick was on its way that the full meltdown ensued. I never thought a guy his size could produce that much snot so quickly. After about two minutes of what seemed to be the end of the world (from Brevin's perspective), I was able to lay out the rules that we had to eat our dinner before we had any M&M's. To which, Brevin replied with his new favorite word... "Okay daddy. Okay."
I don't believe that Jill was trying to put me through a challenging encounter with our little Buca Buca man. I believe it was just one of her not so fine moments. I am quite certain that it will be a lesson that I won't forget... (However, I may just return the favor sometime, just to make sure that she fully understands the importance of not handing a toddler a 14 oz bag of chocolate prior to having dinner taken care of.) Despite all of the craziness that evening, I did of course get my cookies, which were oh so good. :)
