Christmas Traditions

As our Christmas card stated, "Our traditions, our stories, our memories may be different, but our wishes are all the same...good friends, good times, glad hearts. Here's to all that and more this holiday season."

One of my FAVORITE parts leading up to Christmas is asking the question, "So what does your family do for the holiday? Do you have any special traditions that you do EVERY year?" And then listening to the response.

As we have become parents, our childhood traditions become prevalent in our adult lives, more than ever before. So here are some of ours to share, some old, some new...

  • Shortly after Thanksgiving, cutting down a fresh balsam Christmas tree and then naming it (this is the FIRST year that we did not buy TOO BIG of a tree!:)

  • Decorating the house and tree together as a family

  • At some point, having a special picnic with all the lights off except the tree lights and then laying underneath oohing and ahhing

  • Going downtown Minneapolis to see the Holidazzle and "Dayton's 8th Floor" display with friends Jack and Anna!
  • Having a Christmas Lights Tour of the Year around our neighborhood

  • Donating to Toys for Tots

  • Attending at least one ugly Christmas sweater party

  • Visiting the passing through holiday train

  • Going to downtown White Bear Lake for Santa (who is not creepy and you don't have to pay 20 bucks to get your picture taken with him-in fact they even give you one for FREE!and a free horse and carriage ride.

  • Hiding the pickle in the tree for the nieces and nephews

  • Having Christmas sausage from Cold Spring, MN

  • Writing Santa a letter, leaving out cookies and then experiencing the pure joy and fun of Christmas morning in our jammies

  • Celebrating the birth of Jesus by reading the Christmas story, celebrating at church and reminding ourselves through the hustle and bustle what the true meaning of Christmas is all about.

We hope you are enjoying your time with family and friends, sharing in old and creating new! Traditions are what gel a family together, create memories and foster those butterflies we all get at this time of year-even at 27 years old! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
