Heaven or Hell?

If you died tonight, would know 100% whether you were going hell or heaven? This is the question that kept us up until the wee hours of 4 A.M. on Saturday night. Good conversation for sure and can't wait to get your thoughts.

The question is predicated both on the supposition that hell and heaven exist and on the belief that one's arrival at either is a result of one's behavior in life. Since both of these premises are inherently unknowable, no one can possibly be certain about the fate of their soul after death and the answer to the question is "no."

With faith in God and using the bible as a resource to my journey, I do believe that Heaven and Hell exist despite the "unprovable."

I agree that you can have a belief that is unprovable. I struggle wtih the answer to the question you pose. Of course I want to think that I would go to heaven and that overall my actions are worthy of being there. But I wonder how cut and dry He will be when we get to that deciding point. Does he give more weight to "larger" sins? I would say that the sins that I ask forgiveness for are "minor" in my eyes but are they to God?!? Will you have the chance to repent before the decision is made?

The question is about knowing 100% what happens after death and to me this implies a level of certainty that requires a distinction between belief and knowledge. There are a great many things that I believe with utter conviction, but there are precious few things that I know with 100% certainty. Counting the conditions of the afterlife among the things I know would, I fear, be a sin of hubris.

Paul, I used to need proof for everything, show it to me, concrete, let's see it. And through a lot reading, discussing, question asking and reading some more, I have come to the conclusion that the Bible holds the most truth to any other book written. But as I have opened my heart to God, I have realized that it is not all that bad. Nothing bad is going to happen if I start having faith and take that leap into a little unknown. What is the worst that can happen? And I guess when I was posing this question and when it arose the other night/morning, it was assuming (Assume makes an "ass" out of "u" and "me":) that you had faith in God and believed his word to be true. So if you have faith in God and believe from his word that there is a heaven or hell, then would you know, if you died tonight where you were going?

Ok, Tina...I encourage you to read the book I just got done with, it was a great great resource in helping me wade through the exact question you have. The discussion we had the other night went to "levels" of sin. A sin is a sin according to scripture. All 6 billion of us on earth are sinful and in the same boat. We are lumped with Bono, your mom, my mom, horrible murdering people and so on. God is love, but God is also just. By accepting Jesus Christ everyday and living for him and through him (I feel like a priest singing when I typed that), you are "repenting." I asked a hard question to a very kind friend this weekend and he researched it using scripture and scripture alone. My question was, "If I accept Jesus Christ right now and die in 2 hours will I go to heaven." According to scripture (which I can give you another time), is YES! Because God knows what is in our hearts and head and knows if we have truly accepted Christ. Also, another good point according to scripture is that you can't really accept Christ and then live a worldly life and then accept Christ and continue to live a worldly life again...it says that when you accept Christ you need to start living a Christ like life and for him instead of worldly temptations. It isn't your actions though that get you into heaven...remember, the only time it talks about judgement in the Bible is Matthew 23 (I think)...review that again...The only time it talks about it. So it isn't about a laundry list of the good you did or the bad, but where your heart lies with Jesus. Also, I have done limited research on purgatory, but do know that it was man created story that is never referenced in the Bible. This is good conversation to have with you guys. Believe it or not, I have not accepted Christ yet because I have had many of these questions holding me back. But since I have been open in sharing my apprehensions, I have learned more and more...and again keep asking myself, "What is the worst thing that can happen if I accept Christ?" Alls I know is since I have chosen to let him in to my heart just a little, good good good things have happened to myself, marriage, friendships and family. :)
